Mouthwatering local and unique gift items, found under one roof, make planning for the festive season easier. The Market at Western Fair District, housed in the 100-year-old Confederation Building, is home to food producers, chefs and bakers as well as skilled craftspeople selling one-of-a-kind apparel, jewelry, artwork, soaps, candles and more. “Once you’ve got your food in hand, come upstairs to the Artisans’ Loft,” says Carole Sceli, the market’s business development manager. “We have hundreds of artists represented here in terms of the art itself.” From vintage to collectibles to curiosities and other specialty shops, it’s easy to find the perfect gift.

“We are proud of the artisans and how dedicated they are to their craft,” says Sceli, who encourages the public to continue to support local vendors in this economic climate. As some of these businesses also ship orders to the United States, she says it’s a worry for them. “It can be a real challenge. The cost of materials has also gone up. If you don’t shop local, businesses will close.”

The market is also a community space and a wonderful place to meet family and friends. “Have a coffee, enjoy live music. The kids can play,” adds Sceli. “We have so much free parking; it’s hassle-free. It’s a great way to meet and shop, especially for the holidays.”

Prints, cards and original art from Spruce Moose. Over 100 shops under one roof.

While Sceli loves to point out to folks all of the charms of the market, she also likes to ask them if they notice what’s missing. “There are a few hundred people, and you don’t see cellphones,” she explains. “They’re talking to each other and engaging. People connect here and connect with the artisans. This is, I think, the most profound thing we contribute to not only the shopping experience but to the city.”

If you’ve never been to the market or haven’t been for a while, come and discover what’s here, Sceli says. “From Windsor to Toronto, there is nothing else like this market. As we kick off the holiday shopping season, it’s a great time to come and see us.”
